Alexandre Barbosa is the scion of a wealthy Brazilian family that lives grandly and gambles for high stakes. His father has just lost the family’s vast coffee plantation in a poker game. But the loss of his patrimony isn’t Alexandre’s most serious problem. He feels honor-bound, even at the risk of his life, to take an active part in opposing the military dictatorship that has ruled Brazil for five years. His patriotism comes into conflict with everything he has planned for his future. In 1969, while still a university student in Rio de Janeiro studying to become an architect, he joins the Armed Resistance. As the result of their militant activities, he and his lover Monica, a fellow architecture student, jeopardize their careers and their commitments to each other as their lives take dangerous and surprising turns in Brazil, Chile and the United States.

"The Barbosa Legacy" by Roa Lynn is a wonderful literary novel with a compelling plot and excellent character development. Like Ms. Lynn's first book, "Farewell Rio," it takes place during the period of military dictatorship in Brazil that started in the mid 1960s. This book is written from the perspective of young Brazilians struggling with their military oppressors. The narrator is an architecture student (later architect) from a well off, rural background in the state of Sao Paulo who must go into exile in Chile and New York to escape punishment for his anti-government actions. According to her Amazon biography, Ms. Lynn has lived and traveled in Brazil and worked for the Brazilian Embassy in Washington. That depth of understanding of the setting and people of Brazil clearly comes through in the book.

The current (and first woman) president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, came of age during this same period and was purportedly involved in left wing activities against the dictatorship for which she was jailed and tortured. A side benefit of reading this novel is possible insight into the background of Ms. Rousseff, one of the most important political leaders in Latin America.

THE BARBOSA LEGACY

Reading "The Barbosa Legacy" I couldn't help feeling surprised that it took an American author to understand one very important aspect of the dark years that Brazil underwent under a military regime the resistance of many of its young, upper class people, particularly the university students, to the excesses of the armed establishment.
The author paints an interesting canvas of such aspect through the involvement of the scion of a wealthy farmer's family, himself an architecture student, with the bank robbing actions that were supposed to fund the armed resistance movement and the chain of events that involved his beautiful fiancée and ended up by their living in exile.
Particularly impressing is the remarkable accuracy of details and of the general spirit of the time, something certainly not easy for a foreigner. And the reactions of the Brazilian students was certainly decisive in the ensuing years to forge a resistance that was by all means important to firmly establish in the country an aversion to regimes of force that was certainly fundamental to the maintaining of democracy. Thus, Brazil has resisted events that in other countries might have blocked the continuity of democracy, such as the revelations that led to the impeachment of Collor , and the parliamentary vote buying schemes practiced during the first mandate of Lula.
For the refreshing view of the facts of that period, I believe that "The Barbosa Legacy" is an advisable, maybe even required, reading for whoever is interested in that black period of Brazilian life. And I am quite sure that, if translated into Portuguese, the book has the necessary elements to be a best seller in Brazil.
Besides, the book sems to me to be appropriate for a movie version. Beautiful landscapes of rural Brazil, action scenes from bank robberies and escape, breathtaking Rio's scenery, very attractive scenes of Chile and New York
might make a lovely tableau.

I just finished reading the Barbosa Legacy, and I was sorry it ended. I really loved the characters so much--they were real and wonderful people--they settled their lives by going along the best path. The family ties and affection were palpable--see the father's letter to his son! I recommend this book to readers a great adventure awaits, as well as a real dose of Brazilian culture and politics. Beautifully written.
"The Barbosa Legacy" by Roa Lynn is a fabulous book. It is a thrilling and an
insightful novel set in Brazil, Chile and New York City in the sixties and
seventies. Beautifully written and extremely well researched, Roa Lynn
captures the complex period in Brazil's history when its citizens were living
under military dictatorships. Her characters are richly developed. I
cared for them, worried for them, and kept wondering what was going to happen to
them next. It is an interesting and fascinating look into a culture and a time I knew very little about.
Roa Lynn knows how to tell a story and keep the reader interested from beginning to end.

With what has happened in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Syria, Roa Lynn gives the reader an insight
into the mind of a young revolutionary rebel and why he and his friends believe it is
important to rise up against abusive dictatorships. This is an important book. Roa Lynn also gives one insight into the Brazilian character and why there is hope for the country's future now that it is a democracy.

"The Barbosa Legacy" would make a great movie. It has action, drama, love, intrigue and
wonderful, colorful descriptions of the Brazilian culture.
