Situated in the rolling hills of England’s pastoral Cotswolds, the Abbey is a charming Bed & Breakfast allowing its guests to taste the pleasures of rank and prestige from a bygone era—until murder slams face first onto its welcome mat.
When the victim turns out to be someone close to both Maggie and Laurent, they leave their vineyard in France to say goodbye—and to find out why.
Once in England, they discover that the tranquil countryside of Shelley and Wadsworth can be every bit as treacherous as the most sinister souk in the backstreets of Marseilles.
What Maggie also discovers is that if she ever hopes to be able to live with herself—or face Laurent with her own guilt—she’ll need to find the killer…
… preferably before she ends up face down in one of the Abbey’s bucolic fishing ponds.

Although this story was well-written and well edited, with a fairly complex plot and an interesting setting which cashed in on the "Downton Abbey" craze, I found myself plodding through it with less and less enjoyment until I finally gave up, swiped to the end, saw whodunit, and deleted it from my Kindle. My problem with the book, I finally realized, was that I didn't like ANYONE. Far from just being able to justifiably dislike some of the characters, I didn't even like the two protagonists. I prefer to befriend the characters in the novels I'm reading, and none of these people, I realized, from the plate-throwing French chef to the money-grubbing wife to the heroine and her husband, were likeable. The amateur sleuth approaches her investigations by throwing one question and/or accusation after another at people with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer falling, yet no one seems to look at her in astonishment and tell her to bug off. Every character is rather jealous and nasty. These aren't people with whom I enjoyed spending my time.Product details

Murder in the Abbey Book 8 of the Maggie Newberry Mysteries edition by Susan KiernanLewis Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
If you're looking for something to read on the beach or while recovering from the flu, that is, something that doesn't require much thinking, this book MIGHT be ok. You'd still have to get past the fact that the author has no idea what Yorkshire pudding is (and didn't bother to do a modicum of research to find out), that she doesn't understand that there's no such thing as a two-piece dress, that she doesn't understand the usage of the word "comprise", and that our heroine is apparently a superhero (she falls off of a 22-hand tall horse at a full gallop in the forest, gets blown up, and is attacked by a rottweiler within a 30-minute time span and suffers bruised ribs, a sprained wrist, and a cut on her head; no medical intervention required).
Actually, having written the above, I realize that the book is actually pretty dumb. Two stars may be a bit generous.
Murder in the Abbey revolves around the death of their friend Roger which amateur detective Maggie and husband Laurent try to solve when they visit his UK estate. Who did it? Was it Annette, Anastasia, Gabriella, Jill, Madeline, Nigel, Trevor, Violet, or Will? Sadly, with so many characters, the reader remains in a state of confusion most of the time trying to figure out who is who. Was that the author's intent? A little moe subtlety and fewer incredible plot twists would improve this book's appeal.
Murder in the Abbey Book 8 of the Maggie Newberry mystery series is the first book of the series that I’ve read. Maggie Newberry is a gentle sleuth who asks questions and puts together clues. She is a gentlewoman with many skills and uses them to her advantage. She is married to a French man who keeps a vineyard and makes wine. This story is about Laurent, her husband, discovering that his best friend has been murdered. It takes both of them to solve this crime.
This book is an entertaining read, and I enjoyed it. It moved along and the descriptions were vivid. I enjoyed the characters and the discovery of the clues. I give it a four out of a possible five stars and recommend it to people who like mysteries.
The mystery itself was good, so that's worth three stars. The rest--meh. Contains unnecessary foul language. The stereotyped characters lacked depth. The book is sorely in need of a good editor sometimes the wrong character was mentioned, awkward sentences were missing words which was confusing and frustrating, punctuation was poor, too many sentences ended with question marks, and the author repeated herself regularly. The main character wasn't too bright or charming and her husband could be quite the jerk.
This was a well written book with few typos. Loving British cozies as I do, I was excited to see it set in a British abbey. The story line was well thought out and came to a satisfying conclusion. The reason I didn't give it a four star rating is I felt it was too long for the plot line. It took me forever to finish, although I'm glad I did, but the middle seemed to drag on. I think if it had been tightened up it would have kept the pace more exciting and my interest piqued. So, only three stars...sorry.
While this story had a good premise and location the characters were all unlikable to say the least. I couldn't find a single redeeming quality in any of them. Each of them showed examples of being either self-involved, greedy, indifferent, shady, stupid or just down right mean and nasty people. Even the two main characters were not immune to these characteristics. Laurent was totally indifferent to his wife's feelings and kept shutting her out while Maggie was just being stupid by going around throwing accusations at people without clear thought. She must have accused absolutely everyone at one time or another of the murders, and with such flimsy reasons too. I want to form an affinity with the characters in the books I read so I can be immersed in the story through them, but I could not form any attachment to any of these characters. This story line had such possibilities if only one of the characters was likable and the plot was more concise. This book was far too long in getting to its conclusion. So much unnecessary verbiage. I am only giving it two stars because the story idea was a good one. Too bad the writer couldn't or didn't want to capitalize on that good idea.
Although this story was well-written and well edited, with a fairly complex plot and an interesting setting which cashed in on the "Downton Abbey" craze, I found myself plodding through it with less and less enjoyment until I finally gave up, swiped to the end, saw whodunit, and deleted it from my .
